The violent crime rate in this community is ten times that of the national average, eight times that of the state average, and three times the Baltimore City average. Families living in this community are exposed to a tremendous amount of stress and trauma stemming from addiction, poverty, homelessness, violence, incarceration, and racism. Penn North provides critical services to over 12,000 people each year. More than 600 people take part in programs and activities at Penn North each and every day. Penn North was the first program in Baltimore City to provide free on-demand recovery support 24-hours a day through the Threshold to Recovery program. Penn North's workforce development program provides soft skills training to prepare participants to enter or re-enter the workforce and placement assistance to support them in locating, securing, and maintaining living-wage employment. There supportive housing program provides healthy and affordable housing to 200 men and women in recovery.
